1. The privatization of water, which means that the government provides water for people, but increases the price until people feel the value of water. The aim of taking this step is that people are consuming huge quantity of water without considering the effect of this major problem that will result in lack of water in the whole country.
2. Large-scale engineering project that will link all the rivers, 37 thousand kilometers of channels and dozens of large dams. The objective of this project is to increase the amount of water available for irrigation and provide additional 34,000 mw of hydropower for country use. The cost of this project is $112 billion.
3. Rainwater collection that will provide water for irrigation all over the year and increase the level of ground water.
The solutions of water crisis in China are :
1. “Three Gorges Dam” construction project which aims at solving the flooding issues that afflicting China and generating energy which will replace coal energy. Most of the people consider this project the solution for China water and energy problem. The project was completed on 2009.
2. South-North Water Diversion Project. North of China is drier than the South that has plenty of water in comparison to the North. The project is aiming at sending water from the South to the North because most of China’s water is in the South, while most of the agriculture is in the North.
3. Water trading for example farmers in the South may raise their income by selling a portion of their water rights to consumers in the North.
4. Increase the price of water. Water cost in China US$0.16 per cubic metre while in USA it is US$2.50 which is not reflecting the cost of delivery. The aim of increasing the price of water is to invest more in water collection technologies.
5. Reducing water use in agriculture by planting less water consuming corps.
6. Improve waste water recycling. For example waste water produced from factories can be reused for irrigation after recycling. This will help in saving fresh water.
In my opinion, China’s solutions for water crisis are better,
more effective, and diverse. I do not agree on water
privatization because by increasing water price, level of
poverty will increase. In addition, population growth is
increasing day by day in both countries so if the price of
water increased this will affect people’s way of living.
Big projects like dams construction will help to save water,
but will displace a lot of people who lives nearby projects
areas. The governments must consider providing suitable
places for affected people.
Desalination is a technology that is used in my country the
UAE can be another good solution in both China and India.
This is because both of them have long shores so this
technology is promising.
